Diabetes is clearly recognized as one of the most common and costly diseases in the United States today,
impacting as many as 18 million Americans. In the past eight years, diabetes has risen 33% and is now the sixth leading cause of death in the
United States and the seventh leading cause of death in Michigan. Approximately 90-95% of individuals with diabetes have type 2 diabetes
(representing 16 million people). In an effort to address the growing problem of diabetes in Michigan, MSU Extension is working with faculty
and staff from the Michigan State University to design interventions which assist diabetes patients in managing their disease.
