Family Stress

This section includes a series of bulletins developed to assist families in family stress and coping issues. These bulletins were developed in partnership with Michigan State University Extension and Michigan Department of Agriculture through the Bovine TB Eradication Project.

  • Change is stressful!
    How to deal with current job, family, and income change?
    Change in one area of life is difficult let alone three! This fact sheet addresses how to handle change associated with job and job function, family roles, and income; and provides suggestions for creating balance among the three areas.

  • Communicating with your Family:
    The Family Decision Making Process
    The Family Decision Making Process focuses on the sometimes-difficult task of communication within families’. It addresses the recognition of family roles and responsibilities, and looks at ways to make group decision making a successful process.

  • Coping Strategies
    This fact sheet focuses on general coping strategies. It addresses both crisis stage strategies, as well as moving forward to everyday coping approaches. It will include information on the importance of support, as well as self-care.

  • Family Stress
    The Family Stress bulletin addresses the issue of family stress, and provides suggestions as to a family’s capacity to deal with stress. It includes changes in roles, the decision-making process, family cooperation skills, general communication strategies, and need prioritization.

  • Supporting Children During Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath
    Within the past year, there has been extensive and graphic media coverage of current events. While all children are different, thoughts and images about violence, war and destruction often foster feelings of anxiety, confusion, uncertainty and fear. This article will help adults support children during these trying times.

  • What Happens When a Farm Family Loses Their Life’s Work?
    This fact sheet discusses tips to more effectively deal with the stress and loss of income when individuals and families lose their life’s work through the farming industry. In addition, it lists coping mechanisms and tips to assist the families in coping with this difficult time.
